AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texans may soon be able to declare their opposition to abortion on their license plates.
The House gave preliminary approval to a measure that would authorize license plates that say "Choose Life." Texas offers 200 specialty plates.
Money raised by the plates would be used to help pregnant women who are considering giving up a child for adoption, infants awaiting adoption, pregnancy testing or adoption-related counseling.
House Democrats opposed the bill, arguing that it was inappropriate to put a political slogan on state license plates. They also expressed concern that the money would go to unproven, unregulated programs.
The Senate has already approved the measure. After a final vote, the bill will go to the governor.
