AUSTIN -- University of Texas police have a man in custody after he was spotted wearing a gas mask and carrying a weapon on campus.

According to the University of Texas' Office of Communications, just before 4 p.m. Friday university police received multiple reports of a man in a gas mask with a shotgun running through campus. The Austin Police Department also received several calls.

At 3:59 p.m, UT police sent out a UT Alert saying they were searching for an armed male subject with a shotgun and a gas mask. It said the man was last seen near 24th and Guadalupe.

Minutes later, another alert was sent saying UT police had given the all clear. University officers found a subject at Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center with a weapon and gas mask. The officers quickly realized the weapon was a training rifle. UT officials say the weapon is red and made of plastic, and it can not fire. They have not said why the subject was carrying the weapon.

The subject is a student at UT Austin.

We have a crew on the scene. Check back for more details.
