AUSTIN -- Drivers may notice a few changes Tuesday to State Highway 71 just past the airport. The Texas Department of Transportation is starting work on a new intersection design.
Crews are replacing the traditional intersection at SH 71 and FM 973 with a concept known as a restricted crossing u-turn, better known as a "Super Street." It re-routes the left turn and straight movements, requiring all motorists to turn right and make a u-turn at the next light.
The design will help reduce delay and congestion at the intersection by more than 40 percent, according to Austin District Engineer Greg Malatek.
The first phase of construction will prohibit left turns from SH 71 to FM 973 and to Fallwell Lane, while crews work on the center median.
