HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- State legislators across the country are considering ways to make dating websites safer for people looking for love online.

Bills are pending in Connecticut, Texas and New York to provide more information to customers about the pitfalls of using the Internet to line up dates. New York lawmakers want to beef up a recent law that provided daters with a list of safety tips, such as not revealing personal information to a potential suiter.

The legislative proposals come amid various accounts of sex offenders using matchmaking sites to find victims. A Pennsylvania man is currently serving two lengthy sentences for sexually women several women, including some he met on the website Match.com.

The website recently announced it will begin screening its users against the national sex offender registry.
