AUSTIN -- A house fire in Northwest Austin which left six people out of their homes and one dog dead has been ruled an accident.
AFD says flames broke out on the back deck of a home on Ladera Norte near Bull Creek Park just before 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Officials say they tried to stop them from spreading, but the flames worked their way inside the attic. Because of the heavy roof, crews had to battle the flames from outside the home.
The family inside make it out safely but officials say their house is a total loss. Damage to their home is estimated at around $465,000.
A neighbor's home also suffered about $60,000 in damage. Those residents are also safe, but one of their dogs died. Another is missing.
Investigators believe that an improperly discarded cigarette or electrical wire could be the culprits for starting the fire.
A total of six people are displaced.
