SAN ANTONIO -- An off-duty Bexar County Sheriff's deputy working security at a north-side apartment complex was shot in the face early Sunday morning, officials said.

He was rushed to the hospital and was reportedly in good condition several hours after the shooting took place.

Bexar County Sheriff's Office officials did not say whether the deputy was grazed by the bullet or took a direct hit.

A suspect was shot once in the shoulder, but officials said his injuries were non-life-threatening.

It happened just after 3 a.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Fredericksburg Road.

On-duty Sheriff's deputies were searching the complex for a suspect in an unrelated case when they said they saw what looked like a drug transaction taking place.

Deputies approached the suspect's vehicle, a white SUV, and attempted to arrest the man.

"The subject put his vehicle in reverse and drive, rammed the patrol vehicle and then also went forward at the officers," BCSO Capt. Tom Roach said.

Roach said the injured off-duty deputy was in uniform and had joined the on-duty deputies near the suspect's vehicle.

Investigators have not determined who fired the first shots.

The names of the deputy and the suspect have not been released.

The suspect could face charges ranging from attempted capital murder to drug possession.

A patrol vehicle was towed from the scene just before 7 a.m. with damage to its left side.
