TRAVIS COUNTY -- Travis County dive teams gathered early Friday morning to resume the search for a missing man on Lake Travis. They went into the water near the Paradise Cove Marina around 10:30 a.m.
Officials say the search for the 24-year-old man is now a recovery mission.
Witnesses told deputies the man jumped off a boat around 7 p.m. Thursday near the marina. Family and friends who were with him say he had been wearing a life jacket, but they couldn't remember if he was wearing one when he went into the water. They told deputies he started struggling and then went under.
The boat wasn't anchored at the time. It continued to drift before rescuers arrived.
“We're talking a huge, huge search area, when you start putting it in that perspective it's going to be very difficult for the dive guys, for our underwater recovery team to have a successful mission and recover the body by the end of the day, but again, they will go out and we'll do the best we can,” said Sgt. Don Rios of The Travis County Sheriff’s Office's Lake Patrol.
One of the men who was with the victim Thursday evening came back to the marina Friday morning with a group of friends. They stood together looking out over the water, watching rescuers.
Deputies say the victim’s friends and family on the boat with him Thursday evening tried to save him. They kept throwing more life jackets out, hoping he could find one and hold on.
The missing man's identity has not been released. This would be the eighth drowning victim on Lake Travis this year.
