HAYS COUNTY -- A San Marcos woman is clinging to life after Hays County Sheriff's deputies say she was severely beaten and left near a dumpster.

Jaime Beltran Granados, 22, was charged with aggravated robbery. Detectives say he could face more charges.

Friends say the victim is 31-year-old Katie Mayfield. Doctors say Mayfield has not regained consciousness.

According to an arrest affidavit, Mayfield got into a car with Granados April 21, but never made it home.

Family members tell KVUE Granados is a Mexican national with no wife or children. Immigration and Customs is involved in the case.

Detectives say this could turn into a capital murder case if Mayfield does not survive.
