AUSTIN -- Safety experts spent the Sunday afternoon helping out boaters at Emma Long Park on Lake Austin.
The Austin branch of the "United States Coast Guard Auxiliary" inspects boats for fire extinguishers and life jackets. Examiners also check for basic mechanical problems and make sure the boat's registration and other documents are valid.
The volunteer group doesn't issue tickets or warnings, they only look for potential problems and then offer solutions to fix them.
"If they pass we offer then a decal which is good for the year and in many cases insurance companies will give them a discount on their insurance and it shows the members of the boating public that they are, in fact, safer boaters," said Alan Mark with Austin US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The Austin Flotilla U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has eleven Central Texas lakes in its coverage area, from Lake Buchanan to Lake Bastrop.
