Victims of crime now have a new resource to help keep them from falling through the cracks of the justice system.

A local non-profit called Crime Victims First held a special event at the Belmont on West 6th street Wednesday evening.

Crime Victims First helps educate victims about their rights.

“We're really trying to improve the treatment of victims by the criminal justice system and we're holding them accountable by allowing victims to file complaints if their rights are violated,” said Jim Currier with Crime Victims First.

At the Belmont event Wednesday evening, trumpeter Jeff Lofton and jazz singer Donna Hightower performed in what organizers call “Music and a Mission”. The mission is to let crime victims know that there is help for them.

“We can increase their awareness and let them know that they have rights immediately because what folks don't know is that they're not automatic. You have to request them in writing so that they are forwarded to you,” added Currier.
