SAN ANTONIO -- A local police officer continued to fight for his life Sunday after being shot in the head during a high-speed chase with armed-robbery suspects earlier in the day, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus asked for prayers for the officer, whom he identified as Robert Deckard, 31, a seven-year veteran of the department.

Police said Deckard was responding to a reported robbery in progress off Mathis Road, on the south side. Upon arrival, the officer was met with gunfire and a high-speed chase began as the suspects fled south on Interstate 37, straight into Atascosa County.

During the pursuit, gunshots were fired at DPS troopers and Atascosa County sheriff's deputies.

At some point, the robbery suspects shot at Deckard's vehicle and a bullet pierced the windshield. The policeman was struck in the head before wrecking his squad car.

An ambulance was dispatched to the scene before 2:30 a.m.

Police said Deckard was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center to undergo surgery. He is currently in the intensive care unit, in critical condition, with a bullet lodged in his brain. Chief McManus said Deckard's prognosis wasn't good, according to doctors.

Officers from various agencies continued the chase, on foot, through Wilson County, using tracking dogs and helicopters in the hunt. Both suspects were eventually apprehended and taken into custody, according to SAPD.

Shawn Ruiz Puente, 32, and 28-year-old Genevive Ramos were transported to the Wilson County Jail just after 8 a.m., Anthony Flores with the Texas Department of Public Safety said. They're being held in connection with the two shooting incidents.

The two suspects are expected to be formally charged Monday morning.

Chief McManus said the suspects are believed to be behind a string of 15 robberies that occurred over the weekend.
