Round Rock High School is mourning the loss of one of their own.
Kennedy Obilom, 18, died Wednesday at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. A district letter went out to parents on Wednesday letting them know what happened.
RRISD brought in 15 additional counselors to Round Rock High School Thursday morning to helping students cope with the loss.
“People have sympathy for him, like the family and everything. It's going to be pretty sad,” RRHS student Shelbi Francois said.
Some students gathered in a prayer circle on campus before class.
Obilom died from injuries he suffered in a New Year's Day explosion.
“This is a shock to the student body since it did happen a few weeks ago. They thought he had a good chance at recovery. So, they're just heartbroken,” Round Rock ISD spokesperson JoyLynn Occhiuzzi said.
Austin firefighters say Obilom and three other RRHS students were helping two stranded motorists near downtown Austin around 5:30 a.m. The students filled a bucket with gasoline and climbed back into their truck to take it to the stranded car. Firefighters say one of them lit a cigarette igniting the gasoline.
The explosion injured all four students. Obilom and one other went on to Brooke Army Medical Center with third degree burns.
There is no word yet on the condition of the other student.
Funeral arrangements for Obilom have not yet been confirmed.
