AUSTIN -- An Austin police officer shot a man in North Austin just after midnight on Saturday, after responding to a break-in.

Austin police officials say that just after midnight, they received a report of a burglary at a business off of Highway 183 and MoPac.

When the officer arrived at the area off of Neils Thompson Drive, he saw a man putting items into a black car and a passenger in the vehicle. Investigators say when the officer parked, the driver of the car drove into him.

The officer first ordered the two subjects in the car to put their hands up. The officer said that the 20-year-old male passenger obeyed, but the driver, a man in his 40s, accelerated into the officer's car again.

That's when the officer pulled his gun, and shot at the driver. The driver was reportedly hit several times.

APD Police Chief Art Acevedo says the entire incident was was caught on surveillance camera, and the footage will be used in the investigation.

Austin police report that the driver is in serious but stable condition, and that the officer involved received some injuries to his leg.
