AUSTIN -- Police have released the name of the 20-year-old woman who was hit and killed by a car before the driver took off. The incident also left a man injured.
The Austin Police Department says Sara Kaitlin Palmer and a male friend were hit while walking in the parking lot of the Ion at East End Apartments off Wickersham Lane in Southeast Austin Friday around 2 a.m.
Witnesses told police that they saw two people lying in the parking lot.
Palmer died on the scene. Police say the man was conscious, and paramedics transported him to University Medical Center Brackenridge.
The resident who called for help told police he didn't see what happened. He said he got up because someone was banging on his front door.
“They were like apparently banging on doors to try to get someone to call 911 and get someone over here,” said neighbor Heather O’Banion. “We were trying to figure out what had happened because all we saw were these police lines everywhere like right in front of our apartment.”
APD vehicular homicide detectives are involved in the investigation. They came out to the complex to start searching for the vehicle and the suspected driver.
Police haven’t said if the two victims lived at those apartments or not. Their bodies were found along the back side of the complex just a few yards from designated visitor parking.
This is Austin's 17th fatal traffic crash of 2013. APD reports that so far this year, 1,487 people have left the scene of crashes, and 63 people have failed to stop and render aid to a person with injuries.
