PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- Neighbors in the Pflugerville neighborhood of Falcon Pointe are taking action after an attempted kidnapping last week on a hike and bike trail.

They spent Tuesday evening meeting with police and setting up a neighborhood watch.

Julia Ruiz tells KVUE her daughter loves using the paths when she's home from college.

“She uses the hike and bike trail all the time. She comes to the gym once in the morning, once in the evening. She meets friends here," Ruiz said.

However, for the first time in the three years she’s lived in Falcon Pointe, Ruiz said she has to worry about whether the trails are safe, after a man tried to kidnap two young girls on their way to school in her neighborhood last week.

“We need to police our area and help the police department," Ruiz said.

The girls fought him off, and thanks to their description as well as tips from the community, police were able to catch and arrest Justin Michael Johnson Thursday night.

Now, the Falcon Pointe neighborhood wants to prevent another scare like this from happening again, so they're starting a neighborhood watch program.

"It's not a substitute for law enforcement, but we need the folks involved for extra eyes and ears,” said Dan Griffith with the Pflugerville Police Department.

“When something bad happens, you want to turn it around for good, and looks what it's done. I mean we're meeting here tonight, the Pflugerville Police Department has graciously offered someone for us to tell us what we need to do," said Ruiz.

Ruiz will be one of the neighborhood watch block leaders in this new program for Falcon Pointe.

“I was the first one to volunteer; I said I want to do my street," Ruiz said.

She'll keep other families up-to-date.

“I'm going to ask if I can have everybody's name, their phone numbers, and their cell numbers."

The community hopes awareness will prevent another scare, leaving the attempted kidnapping in the past.
