PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- It was standing room only Thursday night at the Pflugerville ISD board meeting with people on both sides of a controversial issue wanting to be heard during the public comments section of the meeting.
Apparently an insurance committee which answers to the PISD board decided to extend benefits to district employees with domestic partners including same-sex couples.
That move by the insurance committee got quick disapproval from some in the community who told KVUE that the Pflugerville board should have put the issue before voters.
While the extended Insurance benefits are for both straight and same-sex domestic couples, most of the vocal opposition at Thursday’s meeting seemed to be focused on same-sex couples.
One gentleman stood up and read a letter he said was from Texas State Representative Warren Chisum who said he intends to notify the Attorney General if PISD doesn’t immediately refrain from recognizing domestic partners because he claimed it violates the Texas constitution, specifically the state’s definition of marriage.
A spokesperson for PISD told KVUE that the first domestic partners are expected to sign up for benefits beginning next week.
