AUSTIN -- A rollover crash in Northeast Austin over the weekend left one person dead and another arrested.
It happened just before 6 p.m. Sunday on eastbound U.S. 290 near Johnny Morris Road. Police say a Ford Expedition was driving fast on the 290 service road when the driver swerved to miss hitting the vehicle in front of him.
“Witnesses said he was traveling at a pretty rapid rate of speed where he lost control, striking the curb. He crossed the other lanes of traffic [when] he hit the south curb line and that caused the vehicle to start to roll, and two of the passengers were ejected,” said APD Sergeant Karl Haverland.
One of the passengers ejected died at the scene. The other has serious injuries.
The driver of the SUV, Roberti Ibarra-Sandoval, 39, has been arrested, and charges are pending.
Sergeant Karl Haverland says the two people ejected probably weren’t wearing seat belts.
