College students in the state of Texas must now get vaccinated against meningococcal disease before heading off to school.

A state law requiring college-age students to get the vaccine at least 10 days before moving onto campus took effect this month. Meningococcal spreads quickly and comes on fast, with symptoms much like the flu, and can be fatal within 24 hours,

As many as 15 college student dies each year from this, and many others are left with lifetime disabilities.

The state law is named after UT student Jamie Schanbaum who had her legs amputated below the knees along with her fingers and thumbs after getting meningitis in 2008.
