AUSTIN -- It is quickly becoming "the" neighborhood in Austin.
The Mueller area off Airport Blvd. is becoming a notable "urbanist" community. What used to be Austin's airport, has become Austin's hot spot.
Mueller is home to a popular shopping center, Dell Children's Medical Center, the Austin Film Studios, and thousands of homes.
On a Sunday morning, there's no shortage of people playing basketball, enjoying Mueller Lake Park, and shopping.
"I really love it. I moved here six years ago and you know, I have kids, we're right by the children's hospital, they have great running trails, it's our favorite park," said Mueller resident Anita James.
"It's Sunday, and we're walking from our house to the farmer's market, and so I just love that we can walk around. We don't have to get into our cars to go to the stores or to go to the park," said Larkin Tackett, another Mueller resident.
The redevelopment of these 700 acres in central east Austin is a project nearly 20 years in the making.
City leaders reached out to Austinites for input after the airport was relocated in 1999. The City of Austin teamed up with Catellus Development to transform Mueller into a new-urban village.
It's a 15-year partnership that will bring even more businesses and homes to the area.
On the corner of 51st St. and Berkman Dr., the Mueller market district is under construction. It will feature a H.E.B. a Twin Liquors store, and a dentist office.
More stores and restaurants are going in near the Home Depot.
When it's all said and done, Mueller will be home to more than 10,000 people. There will be more than 5700 single and multi-family homes, 25 percent of them in the affordable housing program.
Plus more than 140 acres of park space. And all of the businesses in the area will employ more than 10,000 people.
An ambitious effort to reclaim and repurpose what is now called the heart of the city.
