Motorcycle officer hit by vehicle

AUSTIN -- Authorities say a Travis County Sheriff's deputy riding a motorcycle has been injured after being hit by a SUV.

Police say the accident happened on Loop 360 at Waymaker Way, just south of Westlake Drive in West Austin. Authorities told KVUE News the accident happened around 2:15 p.m. Monday.

Initial reports stated the officer had life-threatening injuries. Just before 4 p.m. police told KVUE News at the scene that the officer was taken to a local hospital and is believed to be doing okay.

Austin police say the deputy was pursuing a speeding driver when a Range Rover pulled out in front of him from Waymaker Way. The deputy hit the SUV.  Damage to the bike was severe. The one person in the Range Rover was not injured.

The Austin Police Department is investigating with assistance from the Travis County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Public Safety.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, one lane on Loop 360 remained closed.
