Mom turns ‘skinny margaritas’ into big business

BELLAIRE, Texas -- The drink of choice this Cinco De Mayo weekend? It’s likely to be a margarita.

This means big business for one Bellaire mom.

The margarita is the number one cocktail in America, but it’s also one of the highest in calories. A Bellaire mom made it her mission to make it low calorie and by chance made it her moneymaker.

Lucy Corona is one ‘margarita making mama.’ Don’t let the Bellaire wife and mother’s last name confuse you.

“I’ve had this name for 45 years,” says Corona. “It wasn’t funny until I started making margaritas.”

Corona is queen of low-cal cocktail hour as the founder of “Slimritas.”

“I would come to my friend’s houses and bring my mix, and then I started getting phone calls take calls from office mates asking me to cater their parties because they all liked it so much.”

Corona’s 100-calorie concoction is made with fresh fruit juices and natural sweeteners.

In just three years. Slimritas has won several distinguished gourmet awards. It sells in 650 retail stores from coast to coast and is carried in restaurants like Berryhills, where it pretty much sells itself.
