AUSTIN -- Police have arrested and charged a man in connection with a shooting that left two people injured downtown on Sunday.
Paul Lenorris Whitley, 19, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police say it started as a fight around 2:20 a.m. Sunday on East Sixth Street near Red River Street, not far from Interstate 35.
Police on scene say Whitley pulled out a gun after the fight broke out, shooting two people.
EMS brought a man and woman to University Medical Center Brackenridge with non-life threatening injuries.
Recently, APD started a new initiative in that area called Operation Safe Passage. The initiative will put extra officers in the downtown area on weekends to respond quickly to incidents.
