AUSTIN -- A father charged with murdering his daughter's girlfriend and her mother was found guilty of two counts of capital murder Wednesday.
Jose Aviles is charged with gunning down 24-year-old Norma Hurtado and 45-year-old mother Maria Hurtado in their home in April of last year.
Norma was the girlfriend of Aviles' teenage daughter. Police found the women shot dead in their Southeast Austin home.
In opening statements Tuesday, Aviles' attorney pleaded not guilty to capital murder. Criminal defense attorney Brad Urrutia explained that the strict definition of capital murder is intent to kill two people.
So instead, the defense only wanted to take the blame for one death -- Norma Hurtado. They claimed the mother also being shot was accidental.
Aviles' verdict comes with a life without parole sentence.
