AUSTIN -- Austin police have arrested a man they say broke into the shed of an Austin church with the intent of committing theft.

According to police affidavits, Jesse Silva broke into a shed on the property of Texas Oaks Baptist Church located at 9910 Bilbrook Place off Slaughter Lane. It happened around 3:00 a.m. Friday Oct. 4.

Police say a man in charge of security at the church arrived on scene after being notified that a church alarm was going off. He has a concealed handgun license and was armed.

The man told police when he arrived he encountered Silva walking toward him and the suspect vehicle, a four-door sedan, so he told Silva to stop and told him that he was armed.

Silva instead got in the car and drove toward the man, attempting to run him over. Fearing for his life, the man shot at Silva, hitting him once in the upper left portion of his chest.

Police say Silva sped off toward Bilbrook. He later sought treatment for a non-life threatening gunshot wound at South Austin Medical Center. Doctors treated Silva, then police arrested him.

Police say the pastor of the church says lawn equipment is missing from the shed.

Silva is charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, and burglary of a non-residence. His bond is set at $70,000 collectively.
