AUSTIN -- A man who helped keep Austin weird for years is now in hospice care. Leslie Cochran remains in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery two weeks ago.

According to a close friend of Cochran, he is conscious, but it is not a sign of improvement in his overall health. The friend went on to say Cochran has "challenges beyond his brain injuries."

Cochran is well-known for dressing in drag. He also ran for for mayor of Austin three times.

Friends and local businesses are trying to raise money to help pay Cochran's medical bills. Portraits of Cochran are being auctioned online. Posters of the portraits will be sold in local-area stores. All proceeds will benefit expenses related to supporting Cochran.

BookPeople continues collecting donations at their store. For $10 or more, you can get a Leslie Refrigerator Magnet Set.
