LAKEWAY, Texas -- The City of Lakeway is mourning the loss of a beloved police officer, husband and father of five. Sergeant Chris Doles was on his way to work Thursday morning when he crossed RM 620 hit a truck then slammed into a power pole.
"It's a regrettable day for the Lakeway Police Department. We lost a member of our family," said Police Chief Todd Radford.
The 47-year-old sergeant was on his way to work around 7:15 Thursday morning.
"It appears his vehicle left the roadway, crossed traffic and struck a utility pole at which point he was ejected," said Chief Radford. "Chris was a very giving person, a very Christian man. He loved his kids, was very engaged in the community. He loved the Lakeway Police Department, loved the city of Lakeway."
Sergeant Doles was a husband and father of five children -- a 10 year old, 15 year old, 16 year old and two children in their 20s.
He took his job as a police officer seriously.
"Every opportunity I gave him to wear plain clothes even as an administrative sergeant, he wouldn't do it. He had so much pride in wearing the badge and uniform and serving the community," said Radford.
Sergeant Doles worked for a number of Texas police departments over the years, serving 20 years in Waco. Thursday was a particularly important day for the Lakeway Police Department.
"He served two years exactly,” said Chief Radford. “Today (Thursday) this is his second year anniversary."
On a day when they had hoped to celebrate his years of service, his fellow officers now mourn his loss.
"Our vision and our mission is to keep our community safe and nobody really exemplified it more than he did," said Chief Radford.
The family is still working on funeral arrangements for Sergeant Doles.
Area police and sheriff's departments have offered to help so that Lakeway police officers can attend the services.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Austin police.
