"Ice chandeliering" in Minnesota

PLYMOUTH, Minnesota -- There was a spectacular show on Medicine Lake in Plymouth, Minnesota recently.

This video shows large piles of ice, splintering into fine shards, much like glass. Some call it "ice chandeliering."

This happens when ice, very brittle due to the sun and warmer temperatures, reaches the state where ice first crystallizes. Then it splinters, creating a shattering sound in the process.
