Bidders competed for a piece of football history Sunday, with part of the proceeds benefitting alzheimer's research.

Legendary coach Darrel K Royal donated 250 of his personal items. Sunday, they were auctioned off in Northwest Austin.

A crowd of people, most wearing burnt orange, bid on those treasures at the Austin Auction Company warehouse. The items included a book about Coach Royal, that both he and the author signed. There were also Texas and American flags from Apollo missions given to him by astronauts. Plus, championship rings, signed footballs, and official program books.

Royal and his wife decided to donate the items before his death last week. The proceeds will go to the DKR Alzheimer's Research Fund, named in honor of Coach Royal, who battled the disease.

The auction company is totaling how much money was raised. We do know one championship ring went for $105,000.
