The San Antonio native ran cattle on land that had been in the family since 1822. His mother was a member of the prominent Guenther milling family in San Antonio.
The Army Air Corps veteran returned to the area after World War II service in the Pacific. He was appointed to fill an unexpired term in September 1949, when the town had just over 2,000 residents. Today, more than 12,000 residents live in the city 27 miles southwest of Houston.
