AUSTIN -- Members of Texas House pushed forward a bill Monday seen as back-up for Bill Powers.
Rumors that the University of Texas at Austin president's job is in danger go back to last spring.
Earlier this session, lawmakers condemned what they called "a witch hunt" by the university's Board of Regents.
The bill House members voted on Monday would require a recommendation from the system chancellor before the regents could fire a school president.
A final vote comes Tuesday.
