AUSTIN – The Kelly Reaves Stadium was sparsely populated Friday evening for the high school football playoff game between Hays Consolidated and Rouse High School in Leander, and that may have had everything to do with the weather.

By kick-off at 7:30 p.m., rain mixed with sleet greeted football fans as they entered the stadium. The temperature was in the mid-30s.

“We've got the heater going full blast in the truck and everybody's taking turns getting in and out,” said Don Zimmerman, a booster club member helping with traffic control.

Hot chocolate was a big seller at the concession stand.

The name of the game Friday evening was “layering."

“Oh, I just have layers, jackets, all kinds of stuff. Layers and layers!" said Joann Long, who came out to support her grandson, a player for Hays Consolidated.
