Weather officials in Japan say a powerful cold air mass from the arctic is causing heavy snowfall, mainly on the sea side of the country.
The snow has disrupted train service and stranded mountain climbers.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency says westerly winds have been pushing the mass toward Japan since last week.
