AUSTIN -- A happy homecoming Thursday at an elementary school in North Austin.

Pond Springs Elementary held a special music program Thursday afternoon ahead of Veteran's Day this Sunday.

Army specialist Ryan Stine just returned from Afghanistan. Stine's son, Connor, is a first-grader at Pond Springs Elementary and was shocked when his father walked into the assembly.

It was the first time they have seen each other in person in the last year though they've stayed in touch the whole time via the Internet.

"We usually go through the computer. This website called Skype. We can see a picture of us and a picture of daddy on a big screen," Connor said.

"Being able to see them even for a few seconds gives us that extra push sometimes when it gets rough," Stine said.

Though Connor got most of the attention Thursday afternoon, his mother Blair and baby brother Pierce were also there to welcome dad home.
