AUSTIN -- According to an arrest affidavit, former Capitol aide Gabrielle Nestande was physically assaulted at the Travis County Correctional Complex on Saturday night.
Nestande, who was convicted of criminally negligent homicide earlier this year, was nearing the end of her 180-day jail term when she was physically assaulted by fellow inmate Rachel Denise Castillo, 27. According to the arrest affidavit, Castillo hit Nestande on her "head, face and body with closed fists." Nestande received a laceration above her left eye and contusions to the right side of her head. Nestande also said that Castillo grabbed her throat while attacking her.
The affidavit said Nestande did not know why Castillo assaulted her.
According to Nestande's attorney Perry Milton, Castillo was a new transfer into Nestande's section of the jail and will soon be transferred out. Castillo was put in solitary confinement following the incident.
Castillo has a history of DWI, theft, driving with a suspended license and prostitution.
Nestande was sentenced to 180 days in jail for the 2011 hit-and-run death of Courtney Griffin. Nestande is set to be released around September 20, according to Milton.
