DALLAS (AP) -- Former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert has conceded in the Republican primary for Texas' open U.S. Senate seat.
Leppert was running in third place Tuesday. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is well-ahead of a field of nine GOP challengers, though it was not immediately clear if he would avoid a runoff. Former Solicitor General Ted Cruz was in second place.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is retiring.
Leppert tried to paint Dewhurst, the frontrunner, as a timid, career politician who too often compromised while presiding over the state Senate. But he was unable to draw enough votes for a runoff.
If no candidate exceeds 50 percent Tuesday, the top two finishers will compete in a runoff July 31.
