FLORENCE, Texas -- KVUE News has learned a female middle school teacher in Florence Independent School District was stabbed by a student Tuesday afternoon.

According to a Florence ISD spokesperson, the incident happened during the last period of the day when the student came up behind the teacher and stabbed her in the back with a knife.

The spokesperson says the teacher was taken to Seton Williamson Hospital in Round Rock and is expected to be fine.

The student stayed on school property and deputies were able to detain and question the student.

Tuesday just before 6 p.m. KVUE received the following statement from Florence ISD:

"Florence ISD can confirm that a teacher was stabbed by a student during the school day on October 18th.  The teacher was taken to a hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.  The district will conduct a full investigation and will take any appropriate disciplinary measures.  As always, Florence ISD remains committed to the safety and security of our students and staff. - Karla Moyer, Ed.D. Superintendent. Florence ISD"

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation.
