AUSTIN -- The Austin Fire Department was busy Sunday morning.

Crews were sent out to the 2300 block of east 5th street around 4:45 a.m. Sunday.

Flames were showing from the one story home when they arrived. The fire department says the home is now unlivable.

Fire investigators have ruled the fire cause as accidental. There was an overloaded electrical circuit in the home. The damage is estimated at $90,000 for the structure of the home and $40,000 worth of content in the home.

Officials say an elderly couple were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and the five people living in the home are displaced. Red Cross is helping the family.

Officials say the family of five were in the home at the time of the fire. They were alerted of the fire by their smoke alarm.

AFD says this is a prime example of how a working smoke alarm saves lives. Austin residents who need a smoke alarm can get one from AFD for free by calling this hotline: 512-974-0290.
