AUSTIN -- Firefighters have contained a structure fire in Northwest Austin.

The fire broke out shortly after 8 p.m. at a townhome, located at 8203 Summerwood Drive.

A giant smoke plume could be seen from Burnet Road to just west of MoPac. KVUE News photojournalist J.P. Harrington says there are five townhomes in the area.

When AFD crews arrived they weren’t able to enter the home and had to fight it from the outside.

Neighbors tell KVUE News the owner was out of town and he is believed to have ammo in the house which could be heard setting off. AFD confirmed there was a large amount of ammo in the home.

The flames were so high, at one point 50-feet high, that they eclipsed the tree lines. Neighbors in the area came out with water hoses trying to keep the flames from spreading into the trees.

Fire officials said four other townhomes suffered fire control damage.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the fire. Fire crews will be on scene for several hours investigating.
