SAN MARCOS, Texas -- San Marcos and Hays County firefighters battled a large house fire near the Texas State campus Wednesday night.
Melissa Millecam with the City of San Marcos said the 56-year-old home at 901 Old Ranch Road 12, was fully involved when crews arrived. They fought to keep the flames from spreading to other structures.
The owners of the home, Dr. and Mrs. Benge Elliott, escaped without injuries.
Millecam was on scene where the house fire engulfed the home and said firefighters were busy fighting the fire that little information is available. She says at one point the fire almost spread to a nearby wooded hillside.
Bystanders like @DevinLaughlin and @lmwall92 took to Twitter, posting pictures of bystanders looking at the huge smoke plume and orange flames. Instagram user Crystal Lee posted dramatic video of the fire.
Millecam says the fire began burning around 7:30 p.m. The San Marcos Fire Department was assisted by South Hays, Kyle, Buda and Wimberley FD. The New Braunfels Fire Department provided coverage for SMFD while they fought the fire.
There is no cause at this time, and an investigation is currently underway.
