SALADO, Texas -- A 16-year-old girl was killed in a crash south of Salado on Friday.
TxDOT reported that a fatal wreck was being investigated Friday morning just south of the rest area on northbound Interstate 35.
Round Rock ISD confirmed that the 16-year-old was a Westwood High School student who had just withdrawn from the school because of her family's plans to move.
A Chevy Suburban driven by the teen's mother hit ice and ran off the interstate. The teen was reportedly ejected before the SUV rolled on top of her. Officials don't believe she was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the vehicle is the mother of the teen as well as three other children who were in the vehicle. The youngest child, who is 2 years old, was locked into a car seat. That child and three others were taken to Scott and White Children's Hospital in Temple. Four others were taken to Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple. Officials say they have non-life threatening injuries. Troopers believe everyone in the SUV is related.
Investigators don't think speed was a factor in the crash, just the icy roads.
