SOUTH AUSTIN -- Austin police are investigating a fatal collision on the Interstate 35 frontage road in South Austin.
Mario Ruiz-Leyva, 18, was driving a silver Malibu when he had a minor collision with a black van just south of the river on I-35 around 2 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3.
Police say Ruiz-Leyva left the highway, heading south on the frontage road at a very high rate of speed. He ran a red light and slammed into the side of a black Toyota Camry.
The two men inside the Camry, ages 45 and 40, died at the scene.
Ruiz-Layva and a passenger in his car were taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with serious injuries.
Ruiz-Layva has been charged with two counts of manslaughter, two counts of intoxication manslaughter, one count of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, one count of intoxication assault and one count of leaving the scene of a crash.
As of Monday he was still in the hospital and not yet been booked into the Travis County Jail.
