AUSTIN -- Austin police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash in Northeast Austin.
It happened just before 3:30 Sunday morning on Highway 290 near Berkman Drive.
According to APD Watch Commanders Lieutenant James Nisula and Lieutenant Jeff Hampton, a sedan and black Ford F-150 truck were traveling westbound on 290.
Police say early reports indicated that another vehicle was involved and left the scene, however APD’s preliminary investigations indicate that the Ford F-150 was the only vehicle involved. After the truck entered the freeway, it began to slide. It slid across all lanes of westbound traffic and the median, then struck a light pole, knocking it down. The truck then slid across all lanes of east bound traffic and came to rest on the south curb line. Heavy rain was reported at the time of the crash.
There were three occupants in the pickup at the time of the crash. One 18-year-old male backseat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Ricardo Segura.
The second male passenger was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge with serious injuries. The driver was not injured.
The driver of the sedan fled the scene of the crash before APD officers arrived. He has been identified as 28-year-old Francisco Garcia-Buentello. He has been charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second degree felony.
