BUDA, Texas -- A fatal accident shut down Interstate 35 near Buda Monday morning.

The Buda Police Department says the accident happened around mile marker 219 early Monday morning. They say it involved four passenger vehicles and two 18-wheeler trucks.

Traffic had come to a stop on I-35 in this area due to a motor vehicle accident a mile south of this location that occurred 30 minutes before.

Buda police say while a pickup was sitting stopped in traffic, it was hit by one of the 18-wheelers, pushing it into a second 18-wheeler.

The 18-wheeler struck another pickup pulling a small trailer, which then struck a van. The van then struck a small passenger car. A 58-year-old woman from Pflugerville was transported from the pickup to University Medical Center Brackenridge.

The driver of the first pickup that was hit died at the scene. He has been identified as 53-year-old Isidro Tobias of Austin. The passenger riding with him was transported to UMC Brackenridge and is in stable condition.

Southbound traffic was backed up on the highway around FM 1626 for hours.

DPS trooper Robbie Barrera says Buda police are investigating how the accident happened.
