AUSTIN -- A wrong-way driver was killed in an accident on I-35 in North Austin on June 8.
Police say Mary Lillie Hemphill, 31, was seen driving a Ford Expedition southbound in the northbound lanes of I-35 near Rundberg Lane when she caused a four-vehicle wreck just before 2 a.m.
Police say Hemphill hit a Lexus, which then hit a freightliner truck. Hemphill then hit a Ford F150 truck head on. The Expedition she was driving burst into flames, and she died at the scene.
The driver of the F150 was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge but is expected to recover. The other two drivers weren't injured.
In September Austin police announced that Hemphill's death was reclassified as a suicide by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office.
