AUSTIN -- A mother is searching for answers after an Austin police officer shot and killed her children's father.
"My daughter, she hasn't been eating, sleeping. She keeps saying she doesn't understand why. She says she needs her daddy, which she does," said Alexandria Gladney.
Austin police say 32-year-old Larry Eugene Jackson showed up at Benchmark Bank to commit fraud. When detective Charles Kleinert began questioning him, Jackson ran.
"I feel like it could have been handled a totally different way, especially when Larry was unarmed," said Gladney.
The detective chased Jackson to a bridge along Shoal Creek where Jackson died from a gunshot to the back of the neck.
"Why did he chase him when he knew he had no way to call for backup? He's supposed to call for backup. He didn't. What did he plan to do under that bridge," Gladney asked.
The officer is on restricted leave with pay while the case is investigated.
