AUSTIN -- Austin Travis County Emergency officials are sharing a reminder this weekend to anyone planning to go swimming. The deaths of an Austin father and his child are reminders why everyone should be more cautious on the water.

Herb Juarez and his two children, 10-year-old Valerie and 3-year-old Andrew, went swimming Tuesday at McKinney Falls State Park. Paramedics were called there around 7 p.m. All three went under and drowned. Emergency workers were able to revive the children.

Thursday morning, Valerie died in a hospital.

Emergency workers say accidents like these are avoidable.

"Teach your kids to swim and waterproof them early on. Don't rely on especially the toys to keep them safe," said Warren Hassinger, Austin Travis County EMS.

The family hosted a BBQ and bake sale at 4706 Prock Lane in Austin to raise money for funeral expenses.

Juarez was a construction worker who struggled to find work. He sometimes lived out of a van as he moved from job to job. The family is trying to scrape up money to cover funeral costs.

All donations for Valerie can be given to All Faith's Funeral Home located on 4360 South Congress Ave. Checks can be made out to "All Faith's" and put "Valarie Juarez" on memo of check.
Donations can be made to Wells Fargo acct# 7170370519 for Herb Juarez.
