AUSTIN -- Austin police released the name of a father and son who died in a motorcycle crash Tuesday evening. The father is 31-year-old Rodney A. Carr Sr. and his son is 13-year-old Rodney A. Carr Jr.
The accident happened on Berger Street near Sara Drive in East Austin about 5:15 p.m.
Police said Carr Sr. drove the motorcycle without a motorcycle license and the motorcycle was not registered to him.
Police said the Honda motorcycle lost control and slid into a parked silver 2012 Nissan sedan.
Investigators said he and his son were not wearing a helmet and both suffered head injuries.
Police said Carr Sr. was killed immediately upon impact. Rodney A. Carr Jr. was taken to Dell Children's Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
It is against the law in Texas for a child under the age of 21 to not wear a helmet. Children must be at least five-years-old to ride on the back of a motorcycle.
"There are laws and rules in place to protect you and it's up to each of us to follow those rules so we can stop this carnage," said APD highway enforcement Lt. Justin Newsom.
In 2012, 11 of the 80 fatalities involved motorcycle riders.
These are the first and second traffic fatalities of 2013 in Austin.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-5594.
