Investigators went back to the crash site where a Cedar Park police officer crashed and died Wednesday afternoon.

The officer was training for a certification class so that he could patrol on motorcycle.

Officer Leonard Reed, 41, was driving down Arrow Point Drive around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon when his motorcycle hit the curb.

He was a four-year veteran of the Cedar Park Police Department and worked prior to that with the AISD Police. Reed was named Cedar Park’s Officer of the Year in 2008.

Flags are flying at half-staff throughout Cedar Park in his honor.

Several people, including other officers have stopped by the crash site to pay their respects. One Georgetown police officer brought flowers and laid them at the site where Reed crashed.

Spray paint marks still show the path of the accident. Police say Reed’s motorcycle went into the air and hit a utility pole. Police say Reed was wearing a helmet when he crashed. However, the impact caused extreme internal injuries. Another officer riding with reed performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Reed later died at Saint David's Round Rock Medical Center.

Authorities do not know what caused him to veer and hit and curb. Investigators with the Department of Public Safety are recreating of the events leading up to the crash.

The entire department is in mourning.

“It's going to be very difficult time for our police department right now,” said Chief Henry Fluck of the Cedar Park Police Department, “We have authorized sworn staff of 79; we are still a department that knows everyone and everyone is close.”

Police say Reed was married with two sons. A fund has been set up in his memory for the family. Contributions can be made by visiting the 100 Club of Central Texas' website here, or by calling 512-345-3200.

Information regarding his funeral arrangements have not been released.
