AUSTIN -- The suspected drunk driver who hit a pole, causing a massive power outage and shut down of FM 2222, has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
Police say the driver crashed into a power pole just after midnight Friday. He wasn't seriously injured.
The crash knocked out power to nearly 900 people in the area. Power was restored to everyone by 4 a.m.
Austin Energy crews had to work for hours to fix the power pole and lines. A fiber-optic cable operated by Grande Communications was still lying on the ground. Crews didn't want to cut it because it services part of the Leander School District.
After 10 a.m. the school district gave them permission to cut the cable.
FM 2222 was shut down through the night. Eastbound lanes have since reopened. Westbound 2222 is down to one lane from River Place Boulevard to Cooke's Automotive.
