AUSTIN -- A recently regenerated plan to develop long term solutions to Austin’s transportation troubles is getting public input Tuesday evening.

Project Connect focuses on high-capacity transit. Currently, CAMPO, the City of Austin, the Lone Star Rail District and Capital Metro are sponsoring input sessions to move the project along.

Austin continuously ranks among the worst congested areas in the nation.

“I get off work everyday at 5 from Round Rock and I live in South Austin and it’s terrible,” said one Austin driver. “I spend hours in traffic.”

The high-capacity solutions being presented through Project Connect will focus on getting more people through the area faster. Some options include more rail and bus rapid transit and high occupancy highway lanes. These transit systems are designed to make fewer stops, travel at higher speeds and have more frequent service. It would also have the capability to carry more people than standard buses.

On Tuesday, Project Connect is hosting the first of three public meetings this week to get input. Ideas will begin to circulate on exactly where to put these different transits, who will operate them and who will pay for it in the long run.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at Bowie High School in South Austin.
